The town of Brewarrina lies 100km's east of Bourke in far North-West NSW, Australia, on the banks of the Barwon River.

The Ancient Fish Traps, used by the traditional owners of the land, can still be seen at the weir today.

Our story,... so far

The Brewarrina Circus Training Project commenced in 2002 after nearly 3 years of planning and lobbying by Outback Arts NSW, Local Organizations, and the Project Co-ordinator. This Project was designed to offer alternative paths for Education, Physical Exploration and Creativity to young people living in the area.
The vision for the Project began after an overwhelming response from local youth to a 2 week long, Circus Skills Training Intensive, hosted by the Brewarrina Youth Centre during school holidays, January 1999.

The Project began in October 2002 with an 8 week long Training Program, during which intensive in-school and after-school classes were held teaching, Circus Skills, Dance, and Theatre. The training concluded with the students staging a major performance for the local and surrounding Communities.

Since this there have been 7 more such Training Intensives: held in,
Feb 2003, May 2003, Oct 2003 and Feb 2004, Sep 2005, Nov 2005, Jan 2006
Each 6 week long session has introduced new teachers and skills to the students, allowing them to create ever more skillful, theatrical and eloborate performances and leading finally to 26 of the participants being chosen to represent their Community at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, March 2004. The students performed as part of Strut'n'Fret's Big Top extravaganza,' The Umbrella Revolution', with their show, 'River Stories,...and more!'.

The students unique and inspirational performance was an accumulation of Circus Skills, Poetry, Comedy, Theatre,Traditional Dance, Hip-Hop, Video Projection, Magic, Tumbling and Aerial Acrobatics.

The Show featured skills such as, Trapeze, Aerial Strops, Web, Hat Tricks, Roller Boller, Stilts, Juggling, Hula-Hoops, not to mention the disappearing Sword Box Routine, and was executed by the performers flawlessly over their 10 show run. The Performers extracted acclaim from every one of their audiences with their unique performance, which showcased a merging of Traditional Culture and values with their own contemporary bent on life. The artists extracted skills, moves and apparatus from many different artistic disciplines and recreated them with their own unique and natural abilites.

These images taken by Penny Johnson, Amy Gordon and Sue Gordon, are a photo diary of these last 3 years of this Project.

Since Adelaide, 16 of these young artists have also performed at Catapult 2005, the first National Youth Performing Arts Festival. See the Catapult page for more details and images from the show.
